The Community Living Room workshops, funded by Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority’s Community Fund, are open to all residents in the Smithdown Road area of the city.
However, organisers from Granby Toxteth Development Trust (GTDT) have just recruited a Roma community development worker and interpreter and hope local Roma will make the most of the chance to learn about local waste and recycling services.
Julie Aitchison, of GTDT, said: “The events are all about building relationships with local Roma residents and other community members and promoting some simple but valuable re-use and recycling advice at the same time.”
Visitors to the first community living room, at 11am-2pm, November 5th at 45, Cullen Street, will get tips on cutting home fuel bills and learn how to re-use items and make useful products out of recycled materials including, for example, making mosaic coasters out of recycled tiles.
Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority Chairperson Councillor Graham Morgan said: “The Community Living Room workshops are great way of getting some really important messages about re-using and recycling materials out to Roma residents and the rest of the L15,7 and 8 community.
“They’re also a brilliant opportunity for people from different backgrounds to mix, meet and get to know each other.”
The workshops are part of GTDT’s Making L1578 Greener project which was awarded £8,000 from Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority’s 2015/16 Community Fund.
The project was set up to tackle the area’s low recycling rates and focuses on local students and residents whose first language isn’t English. It aims to reuse, repair, recycle or in other ways divert a total of 65 tonnes of material which would otherwise have gone to landfill.
