Fern Grove Bee-keepers first honey harvest

There have been lots of articles detailing the fact that the humble honey bee is in decline and yet virtually all of our non-grain foods are dependent on honey bee pollination to a large degree. 

As part of the L8 Living Sustainably project, we launched a Community Bee Project in April 2014 to train local people to become bee-keepers and to help increase honey bee numbers and awareness about the issues facing bees.

This training saw a number of residents local to Fern Grove Community Garden become qualified bee-keepers and resulted in the formation of the Fern Grove Bee-Keepers.

Nearly a year on their formation the Fern Grove Bee-Keepers have now harvested their first honey.

It took a bit of time to figure how to use the extractor but once they got the hang of it, the honey was pouring out.

This first harvest has produced 60 8oz jars of delicious honey, which is very nice with undertones of Jasmine.
