Day 5 of our 12 days of Christmas energy saving tips!

On the fifth day of Christmas….

…..Five green things!

1.  Energy saving light bulbs, which will soon completely replace traditional bulbs in the shops, last up to 10 times longer and can save you around £55 over the lifetime of the bulb.  The saving could, however, be much higher: around £120 over its lifetime if you are replacing a high-wattage incandescent bulb.

2.   If you plan to decorate your garden as well as your home, it makes sense to invest in some solar-powered fairy lights that won't add to your electricity bills.  For other decorative lights, depending on the quality, white LED bulbs use only about one-third as much power as the conventional incandescent variety to provide the same amount of light.  For rope lights the saving is often even greater: for example, a nine-metre-long rope light with conventional bulbs uses 140 watts on average, whereas for an LED rope light the figure is only about 14 watts.

3. Turning your thermostat down by 1 degree can save you as much as £60 a year.

4.  Shrink you bills not your clothes! Most modern detergents will still clean at 30-40 degree, saving you a significant amount of money.

5.  Check with you fuel providers if there are any discounts or grants you are eligible for, there are lots around and they won’t always tell you what’s available!
