There was a great atmosphere with a wide variety of activities provided by our partners who as always didn't let us down. They provided activities as varied as make your own bird feeder ,create your own mosaic coaster, green your garden by making up a potted plant, relax by getting either a hand or back massage , pat a pony and relax by getting involved in some mindfulness activities. We also had our visit from Bulky Bob with some great preloved furniture and a large donation of used and new uniforms provided by the community through Tesco's Community Development worker from the Park Road store . A big thank you to everyone who came along, supported and got involved in making such a great event on Millennium Green.

Earlier this year we had a request from the Blooming Green Triangle to partner up and work together to replenish the herbs and plants down the Granby four streets.

The Blooming Green Triangle are a group of local residents that came together to clean and green a number of local streets that where under threat of demolition.

The last couple of weeks we have been supporting this group by providing plants and raised beds that will continue to bring a smile to the local residents and to all of the people who come along to the community monthly market.
As we've had very dry weather to contend with, we've been very busy trying to keep these plants watered! That's why we're delighted that beloved local pizzeria Roman Pizza has agreed to give us a hand by providing us with water. It's great to link up with brilliant local businesses and pull together to keep our community looking good.

School's out and our summer activities are well and truly underway! Wednesday saw the first of our Nature Walks where we get out to a local park for some exercise and fresh air, checking out the wildlife along the way. We looked for faces in trees, had a look at the ducks, hit the swings and finished with a bit of ice cream. If you're interested in more information on our summer events for young people, give us a call or pop down to our office on Lodge Lane.
The fantastic volunteers are starting to see the fruits of their labours.

There are three beds altogether. One has our fruits and veggies like courgettes, beetroot, tomatoes, chilis, peas and radishes (the ALS cafe are already using these as ingredients for their dishes!).

Another has our herbs, which are free for anyone to take leaves from to add some kick to their meals. The final bed is for wildflowers, which have mostly annuals like cornflowers and borage, but also biennials like foxgloves which are lying in wait until next year when they'll produce amazing towers of flowers!

Potatoes and garlic have already come out of the ground and our mini pumpkin patch is starting to show fruits. This is very exciting and will provide us with a warming soup when the winter months come along - maybe we can carve something spooky on them at Halloween, too!

Plants won't produce fruits without their flowers being pollinated by bees and other insects. These love the flowers of plants from the squash family, to which pumpkins belong, but to give them an extra bit of encouragement we're growing big, tall sunflowers again this year. One is taller than me and is a real hit with the bees.

Look after the wildlife and the wildlife will look after you!

and Solway street.

The planters where paid for by the Liverpool City Council and where made by the project Skill Mill.

Skill Mill is a Social Enterprise which provides employment opportunities for young offenders in Horticulture services across Merseyside and this group made the new planters for Loving Lodge Lane 2018.

The L8LS project and GTDT supplied the beautiful array of plants. Take a look at the pics of how partnership working and a dash of colour can really transform an empty space.
The Somali Womens Group here on Lodge Lane was one of the first projects that the L8LS got involved in . Back in 2014 Liverpool City Council installed 3 growing beds for the centre which was soon followed by a grow your own food course, that GTDT and the L8LS project delivered.

This became our first "Field to Fork" project as the produce that was grown from the garden became the cooking ingredients for the lunches and dinners that the ladies would cook for the elders in the community.

But as time went by the centre started to suffer financially and changes to the staff meant that the centre was not being accessed as often by the Somali community.

Last month by chance the L8LS project got chatting to a lovely volunteer at the centre ,Sahra, and she began to tell us how she would love the garden to be brought back to life. The garden had become so overgrown that the ladies could not even open the back door !

So Mike and I made a start on the back and managed to get it cleared in no time at all and already GTDT and the L8LS have started to deliver a growing courses for the ladies. They have really embraced the garden and it is lovely to see them all enjoying, sharing and growing once again.

Keep posted for more activities and how GTDT and the L8LS project will be supporting this centre.
Their ideas ranged from a Book Club/ Book Swap, Line Dancing . Knit and Natter, Lessons on how to use a Smart Phone and Calligraphy Classes. Wow what a range . We will be developing some of ideas in partnership with Riverview and will keep you updated on how some of these ideas develop.

It hasn't always been this great site as we see it today. Lisa and her family have lived next to this green-space for 27 years after the former house was burnt down by an electrical fire.

The garden became a dumping ground and it became the home to many rats. Well that was until Cllr Steve Munby, James and Ade from LCC and ourselves all went on an Environmental ward walk back in September 2017.

Lisa and her husband both spent the time to talk to us on that day about the state of the site and how it was making their lives hell with the rats and rubbish.

The site has now been cleared, growing boxes have been installed, soil delivered, rats have been evicted and the rubbish has been removed, but sadly Lisa's husband, Alan, sadly passed away before he could see any of these changes.

GTDT and the L8LS project have spent time with the family over the last couple months and because Alan wanted the area to be cleared so that the local community could enjoy, the family and other local residents have decided that they would like the space turned into a memorial garden.

Last Thursday we held our first gardening session with the group, holding these sessions will skill them up the residents
so that they are able to continue to enjoy and maintain this space year after year.
The weather hasn't been great but we have all enjoyed ourselves and we had plenty of activities to keep us busy.

We decorated cakes and had competitions galore, We did puppet making out of cardboard plates and my favourite we got to meet Alby the Albatross through our storytelling session with Colin who is a local writer.
We also held our first family breakfast at St Bedes which was great fun and it is something we will be doing again next half term.
If you would like you child to join us for next half term then pop down to the office and fill out a registration form ( 8-12 year olds)
We also have volunteering opportunities for our kids clubs too, so if you would like to help us organise our activities give us a call on 0151 734 4925 and contact Nicola or Tara.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3436915660531626822.post-44447071633750625302018-04-04T11:45:00.000+01:002018-04-30T11:52:34.286+01:00Grubby Hands soft skill sessions
Yesterday we held our first skills session with some of the new plot holders on the Grubby Hands site.

The weather was kind to us and conditions were perfect for digging. We covered the use of garden tools, basics of weeding and soil cultivation.

Our growers even harvested some rhubarb and spinach. We'll be getting to grips with sowing seeds and planting up next week so watch this space.
This month we looked at the subject of tariff rates, discount schemes and its qualifying criteria that operate through the various energy companies. It certainly created quite a heated discussion. We all agreed even though at the end of the session we had a better understanding of the subject we found it a very difficult subject to grasp. We are not defeated and will be arranging to bring in some of our partners to discuss energy tariffs in more detail and hopefully get a better understanding of this difficult subject.

To encourage waste reduction and recycling, we have held a
series of events throughout the area, such as Loving Lodge Lane, Waste
Not Want Not, Community Living Rooms, Make Do and Mend workshops and
our Clothes Rail events.
As part of the project we have expanded our work further afield,
promoting waste reduction and recycling messages to residents in wards
around Lodge Lane, namely Picton, Princes Park, Greenbank, Kensington, Riverside and Wavertree. In doing so the project has amassed a ‘green’ army of
environmental volunteers including Recycling Ambassadors and Champions,
and Waste Warriors.

Dr Lindsey Guy, Chief Executive of GTDT, said: “We have been delivering
recycling and waste management projects for several years around the
Granby Toxteth area, and recently more further afield. Funding from MRWA and GTDT’s own Big Lottery funding – L8 Living Sustainably – have enabled us to develop a transferable model which works successfully with many different communities and groups.

“For
2017/2018 we’ve been continuing to work with these – and new – communities as well as working with MRWA to develop our models of good
practice within communities to create packages of support which promote
good recycling practices and help to change people’s behaviour.”

As well as engaging with thousands of people, the project has also diverted 53 tonnes of materials from going to waste, safeguarded two full-time jobs, hosted 28 clothes giveaways and arranged nine furniture re-use events.

Councillor Graham Morgan, Chairperson of MRWA, said: “GTDT are experts at finding and talking to a variety of different communities in our region, who are not always easy for us to reach. That is why the Fund and projects such as this one are so important. If we are to make a reduction on the amount of waste being created in Merseyside then everybody has to be on board.”Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03774851810760935720noreply@blogger.com
